The Kasthamandap was one of the oldest wooden buildings not only in Kathmandu but even in the whole world. The house was built probably in the late 12th century from the wood of one single tree in the center of Kathmandu. The open pagoda-like pavilion (mandap) served for many centuries as a restplace on the trade route to Tibet and was still today accommodation for poor people. Inside in four corner niches were shrines for Ganesha. A statue of Gorakhnath, the patron saint of the royal family Shah, was located in the center of the Kasthamandap. The Kasthamandap was destroyed by the earthquake on April 25, 2015. It will be rebuild again.
